KYOTO, Japan-Omron Corp. introduced a face-recognition technology it said can be implemented in personal digital assistants, mobile phones and other mobile devices with camera functions.
The OKAO Vision Face Recognition Sensor is able to recognize and verify the authenticity of device users through face recognition. After a user registers his own face image to his device, he then takes a photo of his face with the device’s camera, and the Omron product automatically detects the user based on the image and unlocks the device.
“Functionality in mobile phones and other mobile devices is upgrading significantly from simple phone calls and e-mails to include a variety of access, payment and planning services. As a result, mobile devices are carrying ever more personal information, including address books, schedules and payment information,” said Takayuki Nakamura, manager of the Omron Corporate Brand Communications Department in Tokyo. “The OKAO Vision Face Recognition Sensor, featuring Omron’s core Sensing & Control technology, has been designed to protect this information even when the mobile phone is lost or stolen.”
