TowerStream completes VoIP over Wi-Fi trial

MIDDLETOWN, R.I.-TowerStream said it has completed a one-month trial using mobile Voice over Internet Protocol over a Wi-Fi network in Middletown.

The mobile broadband provider said it allowed VoIP phone calls to pass seamlessly between Wi-Fi access points without dropping the call. Users in New York City with VoIP Wi-Fi-enabled handsets or notebooks will soon be able to trial the free service, TowerStream said.

“With VoIP’s accelerated acceptance and growth, combined with recent commitments from handset makers to include Wi-Fi and VoIP capabilities, TowerStream will give these technologies a home to roam on,” said Jeff Thomson, TowerStream’s president and chief executive officer. “Using advanced handsets, consumers will soon have access to high-speed data capabilities and enhanced voice features never seen on a mobile phone before.”
