SAN DIEGO-Qualcomm Inc. said it is partnering with L.M. Ericsson to support CDMA technical trials in South Africa, covering residential neighborhoods, business parks and locations with limited wireless access.
The technical trials will demonstrate the benefits of CDMA2000 1x and EV-DO while leveraging the existing GSM networks, said the companies, adding it will showcase roaming between both protocols.
“Operators will be able to preserve their current investments and GSM infrastructure, while taking advantage of the cost savings, greater subscriber capacity, spectral efficiency and superior data transmission capabilities afforded by CDMA2000 and CDMA2000 1x EV-DO,” said Tom O’Neill, vice president of business development at Qualcomm.
