SAO PAULO, Brazil-Motorola Inc. said it has invested $5 million for research and development during the next three years to pursue two new initiatives.

The initiatives include developing new applications for mobile and fixed telephony carriers and the continued development of its softswitch technology.

The company said it is part of its R&D efforts here, which have gulped more than $175 million since the program began in 1997.

“With these new research efforts, we intend to stay at the forefront of the telecommunications networks evolution, supporting carriers by supplying value-added services and continuing development of innovative solutions,” said Mauricio Gomes, director of Motorola Networks in Brazil.
