MANHASSET, N.Y.-The WiMedia Alliance said it has merged with the MultiBand OFDM Alliance Special Interest Group.
The combined group will be known as the WiMedia Alliance Inc. Both groups plan to interface their complementary protocols for ultra-wideband technology.
The combined group, which espouses a multi-band approach, is in conflict with Freescale Semiconductors Inc., which supports a single band. WiMedia Alliance Inc. is anticipating a Federal Communications waiver to allow it use its radio in the United States.
“It just makes sense to formally combine the groups,” said Glyn Roberts of STMicroelectronics and former president of the WiMedia Alliance. “There is a great deal of common member activity and interest.”
