SAN DIEGO-The Open Mobile Alliance clarified its role in digital rights management license pricing Thursday, going out of its way to say that it is not affiliated with the MPEG Licensing Authority.
The move follows a controversial announcement from MPEG LA touting an agreement to allow manufacturers to license a set of patents for a fee of $1 per device. Some consumer electronics makers have balked at the DRM fee, saying the price is too steep for anti-piracy software that may actually make their products less attractive to consumers.
Wednesday, the OMA issued a statement distancing itself from the licensing authority.
“OMA is chartered for the purpose of creating technical specifications and does not participate in patent portfolios or license pricing,” the organization said. “OMA has no relationship with MPEG LA.”
