Wireless carriers to compete with IP technologies for revenues

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-The migration of fixed-line traffic to mobile networks is expected to create a $200 billion revenue opportunity for mobile networks as well as Internet Protocol technologies, according to an upcoming report from Pyramid Research called “The Future of Mobile Voice.”

Mobile operators will compete with IP technology offerings for those revenues. To remain on top of mobile voice, mobile operators must rethink their approach to end-user services and networks, according to the report.

“Growing mobile voice revenue is an increasingly challenging task. In developed markets, mobile minutes are often given away for a pittance in the heat of competition, decreasing voice ARPU (average revenue per user) while mobile data adoption remains weak,” said Svetlana Issaeva, the report’s author.

New IP technologies will give fixed-line operators and Voice over IP service providers the opportunity to add mobile voice offerings and expand revenues.

“Mobile operators must react soon,” said Issaeva. “This means integrating new delivery networks like WLAN and moving toward mobile VoIP, otherwise they risk losing ground to fixed-line operators, who are aggressively seeking to incorporate mobile services into their portfolios.”
