OSLO, Norway-Opera Software said it expects to increase sales of its Web browser through Nokia Corp., according to reports, a move that could further expand the wireless Internet marketplace.
Opera sells a scaled-down version of its standard Internet browser to mobile-phone makers like Nokia. The software allows mobile-phone users to view standard HTML Internet pages on their phones rather than so-called wireless Web pages, which are written in the WML or xHTML programming languages. There are a far greater number of standard HTML Internet sites than wireless Web sites, primarily because a far greater number of people surf to colorful, richly detailed standard Internet sites.
However, Opera’s browser is generally installed only in high-end phones. Companies like Openwave Systems Inc. and Access Co. Ltd. continue to sell wireless Web WAP browsers to handset makers for mid- and low-end phones.
