NEW ORLEANS-In the interest of advancing mobile television services, Qualcomm Inc. said it will work with leading companies to create a multi-party organization committed to advancing the global standardization of FLO technology, the air interface specification for the forward link only technology.
FLO is designed for mobile multimedia environments to enable real-time content streaming and other data services.
“Our goal is for FLO to be a globally adopted standard, and we are taking the necessary steps to make that happen,” said Rich Sulpizio, president of Qualcomm MediaFLO.
In another effort to build the market for wireless TV, Crown Castle said it has formed a new subsidiary, Crown Castle Mobile Media, to deliver mobile television service to handheld devices.
“Crown Castle owns over 10,000 wireless towers and holds a nationwide spectrum license,” said John P. Kelly, president and chief executive officer of Crown Castle. “These valuable assets, combined with our proven expertise in digital broadcasting in the U.K., provides a unique opportunity to take a leading position in the emerging mobile television market.”
Crown said Allen & Company L.L.C., a New York based investment bank has made an equity investment to acquire a minority interest in Crown Castle Mobile Media and will advise the company.
