Company behind avatars for cell phones gains funding

LONDON-Saw-You Ltd., a mobile technology company focusing on social networking, said Wednesday it has secured a multimillion-dollar investment from European venture capitalist Benchmark Capital.

Details of the investment were not disclosed. Saw-You said it will use the cash to expand its global presence in new markets throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North America and Asia/Pacific.

The 6-year-old Saw-You is the creator of the “Weemee,” a customized avatar a user creates as a caricature of herself that can be used online or on a mobile phone. More than 3.5 million of the cartoons have been created by U.K. subscribers, the company said.

“Weemee is proof that injecting emotion, personalization and fun into MMS is the way forward,” said Barry Maloney, partner at Benchmark Capital. “We are very excited to be investing in Saw-You and are confident that it will continue to enjoy great success.”
