Prepaid mobile virtual network operator TracFone Wireless said it replaced a batch of its Nokia Corp. 1100 phones with models that included “updated software enhancements.” The carrier did not say what ailed the devices or how many phones were replaced.
A company spokeswoman said the issue did not affect TracFone customers and was not a widespread problem.
Although rarely discussed, software glitches and phone bugs are a common occurrence in the wireless industry. Indeed, T-Mobile USA Inc. recently suspended sales of its high-end iPAQ from Hewlett-Packard Co. due to software problems. The issue has given rise to an entire sector built around over-the-air updating technology, which would allow carriers to remotely beam software upgrades into devices.
