Motorola to embed Shazam music-ID software in phones

LONDON-Mobile music company Shazam Entertainment has teamed with Motorola to develop new music-identification software embedded in the manufacturer’s handsets.

With the new technology, wireless users can capture music played from an outside source into their phones, “tagging” songs to be identified. Music can then be sent to Shazam’s database, which returns the name of the song, artist and album information on the phone’s screen.

“By embedding Shazam’s technology into mobile devices, Motorola is further establishing music over mobile as one of the key industry drivers for 2005,” said Claus Nehmzow, international development director of Shazam Entertainment. “We are continuing to develop our technology to enable us to link music products and services on a global platform and working with one of the top three handset manufacturers in the world is an integral part of our future business strategy.”

Also Tuesday, Shazam appointed Andrew Fisher as the company’s new chief executive officer. Fisher moves to Shazam from InfoSpace Inc., where he spent six years as European managing director. Virgin Mobile, Vodafone, NME and Ministry of Sound were among Fisher’s clients during his tenure at InfoSpace.
