TORONTO-Rogers Wireless and MobiTV producer Idetic Inc. said the carrier will launch a wireless television service for its subscribers by June.
Rogers Mobile Television, which looks to be the first such service for Canadian wireless users, will include news, sports and entertainment programming from the carrier’s mobile Internet service as well as live content of the Toronto Blue Jays Major League Baseball team. Other channels are expected to be announced to the line-up in coming weeks.
The service, which will be powered by MobiTV, will be offered initially for $9 a month plus data subscriptions of $10 to $15 a month. Subscribers can purchase and download the offering directly over their handsets.
“It’s been just one short year since we launched MobiTV and, already, watching TV while on the move has become part of daily life for hundreds of thousands of cell-phone users,” said Philip Alvelda, chairman and chief executive officer of Idetic.
Cingular Wireless L.L.C. and Sprint PCS offer MobiTV service in the United States.
