Movida Communications Inc. reported that due to the strong response in Phoenix and San Diego to its Movida prepaid wireless service targeting the Hispanics community, it is accelerating the rollout of the service to additional markets with plans for nationwide coverage by the end of the year. Movida, which is owned by The Cisneros Group of Companies, said its launch plans include Puerto Rico in August, Florida and Georgia in September, and Illinois and Michigan in October.
The service, which uses Sprint Corp.’s wireless network through a mobile virtual network operator arrangement that was announced in February, is currently available through select Wal-Mart locations with other retailers expected to be added later this year.
“We want to thank Sprint PCS and Wal-Mart for their support in this first stage of the launch of Movida and look forward to their support in the special events and other promotional activities planned for the second phase of our rollout,” said Enrique Garcia, chairman of the board at Movida.
Garcia added that the company planned to push ahead with a broader handset selection for the service, as well as launch a camera phone.
In support of its accelerated rollout, Movida announced a distribution and logistics services agreement with Brightpoint North America L.P. Terms of the agreement were not released.
