SBC VPN solution addresses business travelers’ needs

SAN ANTONIO-SBC Communications Inc. launched a package of integrated wireless remote access options for its virtual private network portfolio that the company said would help business travelers access network applications and information when out of the office.

The package, dubbed VPN RoadWarrior, combines SBC’s PremierSERV VPN secure remote access solution with its FreedomLink Wi-Fi hot spot network and subsidiary Cingular Wireless L.L.C.’s nationwide EDGE wide area network. Users also can add selected access through Research In Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerry device to the package.

SBC explained the package will allow users to switch between office network and wireless connection technologies at maximum available access speed using its FreedomLink Connection Software on a laptop computer. The client detects available wireless data connections at a given time and location, and allows users to switch between the connection choices. The software also includes an SBC VPN access button and a hot spot location finder.

SBC said it will add Cingular’s planned UMTS/HSDPA network access to the package, which will provide higher wide area network access speeds. Cingular has said it plans to launch UMTS/HSPDA services in select markets beginning early next year.

In an unrelated announcement, Cingular said it was selected as the exclusive wireless provider for the University of Georgia’s mobile media consortium. As a member of the MMC, Cingular is providing GSM-based network services as the backbone for faculty and students in developing and showcasing mobile applications. The applications are using Cingular’s SMS and MMS platforms.
