Microsoft joins UWB group

SAN RAMON, Calif.-The WiMedia Alliance said Microsoft Corp. has joined its effort to push standardization and adoption of ultra-wideband technology for high-speed wireless connectivity.

The industry association, which recently joined forces with the MultiBand OFDM Alliance Special Interest Group, plans to release an initial version of a physical layer specification by July. The group hopes to push uptake of UWB for high-speed, short-range, cable-free connectivity for a variety of multimedia consumer electronics, personal computer peripherals and mobile devices.

“Microsoft’s participation in WiMedia is a critical step to ensure that customers using UWB receive a seamless out-of-box experience,” said Stephen R. Wood, president of the WiMedia Alliance. “Microsoft’s participation at the board level will help make sure that our wireless platform remains aligned with the operating system strategy over time.”
