Soon-to-launch mobile virtual network operator Amp’d Mobile Inc. announced the creation of its mobile gaming category and distribution deals with more than a dozen mobile game developers.
Amp’d Mobile said the mobile gaming category will be available through its live user interface when the company launches its youth-oriented MVNO service later this year. The service will use Verizon Wireless’ CDMA2000 1x EV-DO network and unique handsets developed by Kyocera Corp. and Motorola Inc.
Amp’d Mobile noted the category would allow customers to purchase games over the air from various branded and original gaming channels. The channels will be tailored toward user interests and include a variety of content geared toward those specific interests.
Amp’d Mobile said its gaming partners include Airborne Entertainment, AirG, Bandai, Brickhouse Mobile, Digital Chocolate, Gameloft, InfoSpace, iPlay, Jamdat, Jumbuck Entertainment, Ninja Mobile, Sennari Entertainment, Sorrent, Superscape, TCS and Vindigo.
The content is expected to leverage Amp’d Mobile’s plans to deploy Qualcomm Inc.’s BREW 3.1 platform.
“The concept behind Amp’d Mobile content delivery is to create programming categories, similar to other media companies, and to let consumers scroll through and change channels similar to their television, to showcase 3G content in a new way,” said Peter Adderton, chief executive officer and founder of Amp’d Mobile. “We’re not interested in simply having a catalog of games to choose from. We reached out to the leaders in this industry, developers who want to maximize the potential of wireless gaming, to help us leverage the 3G broadband network and new handset technology and deliver ‘console-like’ game play for the first time.”
