SAWBRIDGEWORTH, United Kingdom-The number of third-generation/W-CDMA subscribers increased 46 percent during the first four months of this year, according to the latest GSM/3G Market Update survey by the Global Mobile Suppliers Association.
There are currently 71 commercial W-CDMA networks in 33 countries, up from 60 networks in 28 countries at the end of last year. An additional six W-CDMA networks are in the pre-commercial phase, said GSA.
The survey also found there are 166 W-CDMA device models available, 58 more than were available at the beginning of the year.
On the GSM/EDGE front, GSA reported there are 84 EDGE networks offering commercial service in 52 countries. The number of EDGE-enabled devices stands at 113 models, said the group.
GSM subscribers reached 1.357 billion at the end of April, said GSA.
