TEL AVIV, Israel-Nortel Networks Ltd. said it completed a trial of High-Speed Downlink Packet Access technology with Israeli wireless carrier Partner Communications Company Ltd. over its live cellular network in Tel Aviv. Partner is joining a limited number of cellular carriers around the world that intend to implement HSDPA technology.
The trial was the first time HSDPA technology, which provides data download speeds of up to three times faster than UMTS technology, was demonstrated in Israel. The demonstrations were performed simultaneously with two different computers with connection speeds of more than 1 megabit per second over a UMTS network provided by Nortel.
Nortel noted it has also worked with a number of wireless operators, including MmO2, Orange, Vodafone Goup plc and Mobilkom Austria, on HSDPA trials and deployments in 2005. Nortel has also announced plans for a major pan-European HSDPA network deployment.
Partner’s commercial UMTS network, supplied by Nortel, covers 92 percent of the population in Israel.
Nortel rivals Motorola Inc. and Lucent Technologies Inc. have also announced HSDPA trials this year.
