Gaming announcements dominate BREW conference

Gaming announcements dominated the first day of Qualcomm’s BREW conference, as developers and publishers from around the world unveiled a litany of entertainment titles for the mobile platform.

Among the more notable developments:

  • Electronic Arts said a number of established console franchises will be among its first offerings for BREW-enabled handsets. EA, which said earlier this year it will aggressively target the wireless gaming market, will produce mobile versions of Madden NFL 2006, The Sims, Need for Speed Underground 2, Tiger Woods PGA Tour and EA Sports FIFA Football. The publishing giant also said it will offer several casual titles for the platform and will announce other games later this year.

  • U.K. publisher Superscape Group plc is showcasing a handful of new games at the conference, including 3D titles based on the films “Fight Club” and “Independence Day.” The company is also touting a 3D off-road game from Ivan “Ironman” Stewart and a two-dimensional branded title featuring the Harlem Globetrotters.

  • Fathammer said it plans to enter the U.S. market it a big way this year, planning to launch 16 3D games for the BREW platform this year. The Finnish game maker will release titles including Stuntcar Extreme, Super Drop Mania, Angelfish and Hockey Rage 2005, with the first games expected in the early fall.

  • AirMedia Inc. said it will target the other end of the market with mobile versions of two Web-based entertainment applications. The San Francisco-based company is showcasing CoolQuiz Mobile, which is based on an Internet quiz and trivia site, and Grab Mobile, a gaming application that offers community features like multi-player tournaments and rankings.
