ESPOO, Finland-Finnish mobile virtual network operator Saunalahti selected Nokia to provide equipment for converged networks that will allow Saunalahti to offer services like Voice over Internet Protocol and multimedia to mobile and fixed telephony customers.
Nokia said its gear will allow Saunalahti customers to enjoy the same user experience with different kinds of access, such as fixed, GSM and wireless local area network. With the Nokia solution, Saunalahti can provide service via WLAN hot spots, as well as standard mobile services, such as caller ID and text messaging to users of fixed and mobile VoIP.
The value of the deal was not disclosed, but Nokia said it is trialing its converged solution with “many leading operators worldwide.”
“This is one of the first contracts of its kind in the world and we are naturally delighted to announce this together with Saunalahti,” said Olli Oittinen, vice president of networks for Nokia. “We see fixed mobile convergence as a tremendous opportunity for the industry.”
Saunalahti holds a 10-percent share of the Finnish telecom market, Nokia said.
