Digicel awarded GSM license in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti-Digicel Group, which operates several wireless networks in the Caribbean, said it was awarded Haiti’s first GSM license through a tender process entered jointly with OneFone, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Haitian GB Group.

Haiti currently has three operators with CDMA and TDMA networks and about 400,000 combined subscribers, including mobile and fixed-line users, Digicel said.

Digicel Haiti said it aims to create positive competition and value for local customers. The company did not say when it plans to launch service.

With the addition of Haiti, Digicel will operate in nine Caribbean countries with a total population of more than 12 million people. Digicel has operations in Aruba, Barbados, the Cayman Islands, Curacao, Grenada, Jamaica, St Vincent & the Grenadines, and St Lucia and plans to create a pan-Caribbean network.
