Trujillo named CEO of Telstra

SYDNEY, Australia-Australian telecom carrier Telstra Corp. said it appointed Solomon (Sol) Trujillo chief executive officer and as an executive director of the company beginning July 1. He will replace Dr. Ziggy Switkowski, who will step down July 1.

Trujillo was most recently CEO of European wireless carrier Orange plc and before that spent 26 years with US West Inc., including serving as its chairman, CEO and president for five years. US West was acquired by Qwest Communications Inc.

Trujillo currently sits on the boards of Pepsi, Target, Gannett, and EDS. He will leave all but one of the board positions.

“During his career he has successfully managed fixed line, wireless, broadband and directory businesses-virtually every facet of Telstra’s business,” said Telstra Chairman Donald McGauchie. “He has enormous depth, expertise and understanding in matters regulatory, operational, financial, marketing and sales and a deep understanding of technology.

Trujillo was appointed on an ongoing contract.
