Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. will power a streaming audio service for Sprint PCS subscribers, the companies said Tuesday.
The country’s No. 2 pay-radio service said it has agreed to make some of its music channels available for the service, which may launch later this year. Some of the channels being considered include new hits, classic rock, hip-hop, country, blues and jazz.
Financial terms of the detail were not disclosed.
“One of our goals is to make this unique content available to as many Sprint PCS Vision customers as we can, over as many multimedia devices as possible,” said Scott Greenstein, Sprint’s president of entertainment and sports.
The service would likely be added to the carrier’s multimedia Vision offerings at an additional charge. Sirius’ would be the third music service from Sprint, which delivers several streaming audio channels from both Music Choice-a large digital music supplier-and mobile music startup MSpot.
The deal follows Monday’s news that Sirius will use a new technology to increase its network capacity by about 25 percent, allowing it to add to its 120-channel lineup. Sirius is struggling to gain market share against rival XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., which boasts a subscriber base of nearly three times Sirius’ 1.4 million listeners.
After climbing about 5 percent Monday, shares of Sirius were down less than 1 percent mid-day Tuesday, trading at $5.94 on the Nasdaq.
