Carriers less likely to use WiMAX than others, Detecon predicts

Large wireline and wireless carriers will not be the ones to take advantage of WiMAX technology. Instead, municipalities, power companies and others will deploy and use the offering, predicted Detecon Consulting, which consults to Tier 1 operators around the world.

The firm said wireline operators won’t want WiMAX to cut into their wireline investments, while wireless carriers will rely on 3GPP technologies like HSDPA and CDMA EV-DO Rev. A. Thus, others in the market will step up to the plate to take advantage of the super-fast download speeds of WiMAX.

The firm also said WiMAX will be more successful in markets like China, India and the Caribbean, where high-speed networks are not as common.

Specifically, Detecon said WiMAX will support applications including cellular and Wi-Fi backhaul, Internet access for small and medium businesses and residential users, public-safety services, and handsets, where it could be included alongside cellular technologies.
