VoIP provider to launch prepaid service using Cingular’s network

Voice over Internet Protocol enhanced services provider CallWave Inc. reported plans to launch a prepaid wireless service designed to capitalize on the growth opportunities of the wireless market and growing integration of telecom services.

CallWave said it will begin offering a branded prepaid service during the third quarter of this year using Cingular Wireless L.L.C.’s network. The prepaid service will include a Nokia Corp. handset, nationwide long distance and 60 minutes of talk time, with additional minutes available for as low as 15 cents per minute.

The service also will offer several VoIP-enabled call features that the company explained were designed to conserve cell minutes and improve call management.

The software-based features include its Mobile Call Screening option that allows users to listen to voice messages in real time and interrupt messages to take calls. The Call Screening option also allows users to screen calls from their personal computers using CallWave’s desktop client.

CallWave said it will also offer its Mobile Call Transfer service that lets users transfer live cell-phone calls to home or office phones. In connection with the Mobile Call Transfer option, users also can use the company’s Follow Me Home feature to have mobile-phone calls forwarded automatically to a designated landline phone when the mobile handset is either turned off or out of the coverage area.

CallWave added that the prepaid service would initially be available only to its existing subscribers with plans to broaden distribution later this year.
