Report says importance of wireless backhaul on the rise

KINGS PARK, N.Y.-Wireless backhaul will become increasingly important as carriers seek to reduce operating expenses and subscribers use more voice and data minutes, according to a study from Visant Strategies.

Wireless backhaul accounts for one-fifth of all backhaul capacity in the United States today, said the report titled, “U.S. Mobile Backhaul: Growth Trends and Analysis 2005.” The study predicts the overall number of wireless backhaul links will triple during the next five years.

“Backhaul is the forgotten component of past and future mobile growth,” said Larry Swasey, project director at Visant Strategies. “Increased mobile traffic has led operators to seek out less-costly alternatives for backhaul as well as higher bandwidth in the link.”
