Alamosa reports positive 2Q preview

Sprint Corp. wireless affiliate Alamosa Holdings Inc. said it added 52,000 subscribers during the second quarter, including 42,000 subscribers through its standalone operations, 7,000 subscribers through its recently acquired AirGate PCS Inc. properties and 3,000 subscribers the affiliate acquired from a rural wireless provider in western Colorado.

The results were a 10-percent improvement compared with the 47,434 customers Alamosa and AirGate added during the second quarter of 2004 despite the AirGate properties adding slightly fewer customers in 2005. Alamosa said it ended the second quarter with 1.447 million subscribers, including surpassing the 1 million-subscriber mark in the original Alamosa properties.

Alamosa also reported that customer churn dipped slightly year-over-year from a combined 2.2 percent for Alamosa and AirGate’s operations during the second quarter of 2004 to 2.1 percent this year.

“We produced solid customer results during the second quarter, including lower average monthly customer churn in both properties while continuing the momentum we experienced in 2004 and the first quarter of 2005,” said David Sharbutt, chairman and chief executive officer of Alamosa. “As we indicated, growth in the AirGate territories slowed during the second quarter, due to seasonality and focus on improvements in our network infrastructure and distribution systems to support further growth and marketing efforts.”

Alamosa is expected to release full second-quarter results in early August.
