DHS chief creates position to oversee telecom infrastructure

WASHINGTON-Key lawmakers are applauding Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff’s creation of a cyber security-telecom infrastructure czar as part of a new reorganization plan.

“As we move forward, one of the most important aspects of national security exists in cyberspace. By creating this important position, DHS is making progress toward securing our nation’s cyber-infrastructure,” said Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Calif.), chairman of the Homeland Security subcommittee on economic security, infrastructure protection and cybersecurity. “Protecting the integrity of our cyber-resources is an urgent priority as technology is the backbone for our nation’s critical infrastructure, including health, transportation, production and government functions. I am pleased that Secretary Chertoff has taken in full account the views of Congress regarding the importance of cybersecurity and our telecommunications.

In April, Lungren held a hearing on Rep. Zoe Lofgren’s (D-Calif.) Department of Homeland Security Cybersecurity Enhancement Act of 2005.

House Homeland Security Chairman Christopher Cox (R-Calif.) said the DHS restructuring plan is right on target.

“The changes that Secretary Chertoff is proposing in the organization and programs of the Department of Homeland Security all have as their focus achieving more effectively the overarching missions of the Department of Homeland Security: preventing terrorism, protecting our nation’s critical infrastructure against terrorism, and responding to acts of terrorism when they occur,” said Cox.

Some of Chertoff’s initiative will require congressional approval.
