MALE, Maldives-Wataniya Telecom Maldives, a wireless voice and data services provider in Maldives, said it awarded an infrastructure contract to Chinese supplier Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. Huawei will supply a unified second-generation/third-generation network that supports the dual access of the GSM and UMTS radio networks.
Wataniya said the solution from Huawei will help the company save on investment costs and enable it to quickly deploy services. Wataniya International owns Wataniya Maldives and Wataniya Telecom, which is part of Kuwait Projects Co. and has more than 4 million customers in Kuwait.
Huawei’s vice president of the Middle East and North Africa regions, Want Jiading, said, “We are gratified for Wataniya’s vote of confidence in Huawei Technologies. Huawei Technologies will provide consultation and advanced telecom network solutions to Wataniya. The cooperation between Huawei Technologies and Wataniya is just the beginning, and we will endeavor to seek more cooperation opportunities on other fronts in the future.”
Huawei posted wireless product sales revenue of $1.6 billion during the first half of 2005, a 120-percent increase over revenue sales from the first half of 2004.
