SAN DIEGO-Qualcomm Inc. has paid $57 million in cash for Elata, a privately held U.K.-based developer of content-delivery software, the chipmaker said Wednesday.
Qualcomm said it will integrate its BREW platform with Elata’s technology, which can deliver content on CDMA2000, GSM and W-CDMA networks. The offering will allow operators to manage and deliver ringtones, wallpapers and streaming media from a variety of different vendors and platforms.
“We will be able to bring the benefits of our joint technologies to worldwide markets, either by strengthening an operator’s existing service delivery offering or by helping to quickly establish a solution that increases the choice, uptake and revenues from wireless content,” said Stephen Dunford, Elata’s chief executive officer.
The deal comes on the heels of Qualcomm’s agreement last week to buy privately held mobile broadband vendor Flarion Technologies Inc. for $600 million. Shares of Qualcomm were down 20 cents to $40.05 in late-morning trading on the Nasdaq Wednesday.
