Carrier Access to integrate wireless backhaul gear with Tellabs

BOULDER, Colo.-Broadband equipment provider Carrier Access Corp. said it signed a memorandum of understanding with Tellabs Inc. calling for the companies to develop an integrated solution to optimize wireless backhaul traffic.

The solution will consist of Carrier Access’ FLEXengine compression technology and Tellabs’ 5500 digital cross connect to aggregate data and voice traffic. The companies said the solution will compress GSM/EDGE Abis and transport of UMTS I traffic between cell sites and switching offices.

“Integration of our technology with new packet access additions to the Tellabs 5500 system offers our wireless operator customers the ability to economically add 2.5G and 3G wireless data to existing radio access networks,” said Roger Koenig, chief executive officer of Carrier Access. “Working with Tellabs, we will offer our wireless customers an end-to-end radio data network solution with a scale in bandwidth from multiple T-1 or DS3 cell sites to optical concentrations in switching offices.”
