Less than one-third of all mobile-gaming titles account for 80 percent of U.S. wireless game revenues, according to figures released this morning by Telephia Inc.
In its latest monthly wireless gaming figures, the wireless usage and performance measurement company found that wireless subscribers pay an average of $3.86 per wireless game, often opting for familiarly branded titles. Puzzle and strategy titles accounted for one-third of gaming revenues, according to the report.
“As in other media and entertainment categories, the mobile-game business is fueled by a relatively small group of hit titles that generate a large portion of total revenue,” said Kanishka Agarwal, Telephia’s vice president of mobile content. The monthly report has revealed “very rapid growth in demand and frequent swings in consumer preferences,” Agarwal added.
Jamdat Mobile Inc.’s popular Tetris title is the most lucrative wireless game on the market, accounting for 8 percent of carrier-billed wireless game purchases. Jamdat games claimed four of the top 10 spots in the report; Sony Pictures Mobile published two of the most-lucrative titles. Penultimate, Glu Mobile, Gameloft and Mobliss each placed one title among the top 10 in terms of market share.
Telephia tracks games and other content from a panel of 30,000 wireless users who give the firm access to their monthly bills.
