SAN FRANCISCO-Chipmaker Intel Corp. offered a general outline for some of its plans in the wireless world, including updates to its chips for Wi-Fi laptops and mobile phones.
“The number of voice lines worldwide skyrocketed with the proliferation of cellular phones, which made the phone truly personal,” said Sean Maloney, executive vice president and general manager of Intel’s Mobility Group. “At the same time, the Internet has unleashed an insatiable demand for computing power. Now, if we can deliver ubiquitous broadband based on open standards and drive performance and power innovation on computing and phone platforms, mobile computing has the potential for continued dramatic growth.”
Specifically, Intel said it is developing a chip called Napa for laptops, which is designed for lower-power consumption, improved graphics and better wireless capabilities. The company also said it is working with Matsushita Battery Industrial to develop more powerful battery technologies.
In addition, Intel said it is working with Crown Castle International Corp. and DiBcom to demonstrate mobile TV services on Intel’s Centrino and XScale chips.
Finally, Intel said it will offer an update to its XScale application processors for mobile phones. The new chips, codenamed Monahans, will be unveiled next year.
