MobiTV, Sprint Nextel win Emmy Award

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.-The wireless industry garnered unprecedented attention from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences as MobiTV and Sprint Nextel Corp. were named winners of an Emmy Award. MobiTV is owned by Idetic Inc.

The companies were honored with a Primetime Emmy Engineering Award for their work in bringing live TV broadcasts to mobile-phone users. The announcement marks the first time the Academy has bestowed the award on a wireless company.

Sprint and MobiTV launched the nation’s first mobile broadcasting service in November 2003. The awards show will be broadcast Sept. 18 from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

“This achievement is an eye-opener to the industry that lets television executives know their audiences are living on other devices,” said Brian Seth Hurst, co-governor of Interactive Media Peer Group for the Television Academy. “I believe MobiTV set the standard and started the race for mobile television.”
