WASHINGTON-New York City Council member Eva Moskowitz has compiled a comprehensive ranking of cell phones based on levels of radio-frequency radiation emissions, saying consumers should be supplied with the data when deciding on wireless equipment purchases.
“In the absence of absolute certainty within the medical community that cell-phone emissions have no link to cancer or harmful side effects, I wanted to make emissions information available to the public,” said Moskowitz, a Democrat who has represented Manhattan’s 4th District since 1999. “People need to make their own comparison-based decisions about what kind of a device they want to use. My office created a list that we hope is comprehensive as a public service and in the interest of consumer education.”
A Moskowitz spokeswoman said the phone radiation limits fall within safety guidelines adopted by the Federal Communications Commission in conjunction with various governmental health and environmental agencies.
The mobile-phone industry is fighting brain cancer and other health-related lawsuits in various courts. Industry lawyers, who have yet to lose a health lawsuit, recently asked the U.S. Supreme court to review a lower court’s decision remanding several headset-related class-action lawsuits back to various state courts. Plaintiffs’ attorneys are crafting a reply to industry’s petition. Several of the cell-phone health lawsuits will remain on hold until the high court rules in the headset cases.
