UltraCell announces methanol fuel-cell technology

LIVERMORE, Calif.-UltraCell Corp. announced a reformed methanol fuel-cell technology for portable devices, which the company said provides twice the energy density of lithium batteries.

The technology uses a micro reformer to generate fuel-cell-ready hydrogen from a highly concentrated methanol solution, said the company. The result is a portable power system with the power density of a hydrogen fuel cell using low-cost methanol fuel. The power unit weighs about 2.5 pounds and is the size of a paperback novel, said the company.

UltraCell developed the technology for military applications. The technology will be available this year for professional, industrial and mobile-computing applications, according to the company.
