Infrared group sets new standard for transmitting camera-phone pics

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-The Infrared Data Association announced a new standard the group said would allow camera-phone users to transmit their pictures to TVs and other electronic gadgets. Dubbed IrSimple, NTT DoCoMo Inc., Sharp Corp., ITX E-globaledge and Waseda University developed the protocol.

“IrSimple is the first and only wireless protocol available today that completes this ‘missing link’ from a digital camera to a TV,” said Ron Brown, executive director of the Infrared Data Association. “IrSimple instantly connects enabled devices, eliminating the hassles found in other wireless technologies. With over 200 million IrDA-enabled mobile phones sold in 2004, IrSimple is being launched from an extremely solid base.”

Although IrDA continues to find space inside mobile phones, handset manufacturers continue to promote Bluetooth technology for such applications.
