MUNICH, Germany-Siemens AG has won a contract with Indian Railways to equip India’s rail line with GSM-Railway mobile technology. Siemens said its three deals with Indian Railways are worth “double-digit millions.”
“Given the popularity of the GSM standard and the tremendous importance of rail traffic in this region, GSM-R technology offers enormous growth potential,” said Christoph Caselitz, president of the Mobile Networks Division at Siemens. “This makes India one of the world’s most important markets for rail communication.”
Within the next year, Siemens said it will supply Indian Railway with its railway@vantage solution, featuring custom-tailored applications for rail traffic, encompassing the entire network infrastructure for expanding the GSM-R network, as well as all components required for operation, including switches, base stations, service and administration platforms, and mobile handsets for the train engineers.
Indian Railway operates a rail network of about 39,000 miles in total length, with 14,000 trains that carry more than 14 million passengers and more than 1 million tons of freight each day.
