Sprint Nextel to offer GPS apps from Garmin

OLATHE, Kan.-Garmin International Inc. unveiled its Garmin Mobile suite of applications, which the company said will be offered by Sprint Nextel Corp. on select handsets. The applications will use embedded global positioning system capabilities of select handsets and include delivering maps, directions and turn-by-turn navigation.

Garmin said the mobile service will enable users to navigate to an address anywhere in the United States and Puerto Rico or search millions of points of interest. The service also includes voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions along the way while on the Sprint Nextel network.

Users also will be able to manage their destinations and personal locations online through the Garmin Mobile Manager Web site. Current Sprint Nextel Vision subscribers can download the application to their handsets for $10 per month.

Sprint Nextel announced earlier this year plans to launch GPS-based location services and recently launched driving directions through its 411 service. Sprint Nextel also offers similar GPS-based driving and location services through its iDEN network.
