Wireless e-mail vendor Good Technology Inc. said it cut an unspecified number of jobs due to the company’s transition from direct to indirect sales. The cuts were part of a restructuring at Good that resulted in a total workforce reduction from 500 positions to 400 positions.
Good launched in 2002 by selling its wireless e-mail product directly to corporations. However, the company recently announced Cingular Wireless L.L.C. and Sprint Nextel Corp. will resell its offerings. Thus, the company is reducing its direct sales force to support sales of its products through wireless carriers.
Kelli Tejada, Good’s director of corporate marketing, declined to give specific numbers on the job cuts. The company added jobs in its information technology, engineering and field sales areas, but also cut jobs from its direct sales force. The actions resulted in a net reduction of 100 jobs. Tejada repeatedly pointed out that Good’s business continues to accelerate, and the job cuts do not indicate the company is suffering.
“We’re growing at a rate that is pleasing to our investors,” she said, declining to discuss the company’s financials.
Tejada said Good’s move from a direct to an indirect sales strategy was part of the company’s overall business plan.
“We knew all along that there would be phases of the company,” she said. “We didn’t know how long it would take to get through that phase of growth.”
Good sells technology to businesses for wireless access to corporate information, including e-mail, calendar and contacts. The technology works on several high-end smart phones. The company competes against BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd.
