RIM to offer Mirapoint Message Server for Internet service

SUNNYVALE, Calif.-Research In Motion Ltd. will offer Mirapoint’s Message Server as a component of its BlackBerry Internet Service, the companies announced. The deal will allow BlackBerry users to access carrier-branded e-mail services from their devices.

“BlackBerry Internet Service is a hosted service that allows smaller organizations and individuals to choose the industry-leading BlackBerry wireless solution without installing server software. Mirapoint’s high-performance Message Server appliance has contributed significant advantages in product implementation and total cost of ownership to RIM’s BlackBerry Internet Service,” said Mark Guibert, vice president of corporate marketing at RIM.

Such offerings could score notable revenues, according to new research from IDC. The firm said the European mobile corporate e-mail market will increase to around 13.5 million individual users by 2009, representing a compound annual growth rate of 36 percent.

“Mobile e-mail solutions should operate as an integrated part of the company’s existing system,” said Rosie Secchi, senior research analyst for IDC’s European Wireless and Mobile Communications program. “Even though e-mail will remain the foundation of business mobility over the forecast period, it is only the beginning of inevitable business developments that will excite market players even more.”
