GERMANTOWN, Md.-Weather information provider WeatherBug said it is hurrying to repair weather stations damaged by Hurricane Katrina late last month to prepare for Hurricane Rita, which is expected to make landfall this weekend in Texas.
The company said it is installing 21 new WeatherBug Tracking Stations in the Gulf Coast region and is feeding live, streaming weather data to allow meteorologists and government agencies to recover from Katrina and prepare for Rita. WeatherBug said its data has been useful in evacuation and emergency management efforts.
WeatherBug also noted subscribers in areas affected by Katrina were able to get current weather conditions and forecasts even when mobile voice calls were not possible, and it said it issued more than 12,000 alerts to mobile users in Katrina’s path.
