TAMPA, Fla.-Regional wireless operator MetroPCS Communications Inc. said it has launched its flat-rate, unlimited calling service in Tampa and Sarasota, Fla. The carrier noted the new markets join its current offering in the Miami area, and subscribers in the Tampa and Sarasota markets can use the service in South Florida for local calling at no additional charges.
MetroPCS also provides service in Atlanta, San Francisco and Sacramento, Calif., and said it currently serves more than 1.5 million subscribers.
MetroPCS launched the Tampa and Sarasota service with 10-megahertz spectrum licenses it picked up from NextWave Telecom Inc. in mid-2004 for $43.5 million. The carrier is expected to further enhance its Florida coverage using a 20-megahertz license it acquired from U.S. Cellular Corp. last year covering Daytona for $8.5 million.
