RadioShack to sell Wi-Fi IM gadget

FORT WORTH, Texas-RadioShack Corp. announced it will carry a Wi-Fi-based mobile instant messaging device from consumer electronics developer Zipit.

Before the start of the holiday season, the retailer will offer the Zipit Wireless Messenger, a clamshell-shaped device with a QWERTY keyboard that allows users to send messages using wireless home networks or free hotspots. RadioShack will be the first brick-and-mortar chain to offer the product, which is now sold online through Best Buy, Target and Amazon.com for between $80 and $100.

“More than two-thirds of all American teenagers use instant messaging to communicate with their friends and family members,” said Ralph Heredia, Zipit’s director of business development. “The response (to the device) from teens, parents and the media has been tremendous.”
