Mobile messaging set to swell in US

CAMBRIDGE, U.K.-Mobile messaging revenues from U.S. mobile subscribers more than doubled in 2004 from the previous year and will account for 10 percent of total wireless service revenues by 2008, according to new research from Analysis.

Mobile data accounted for less than 5 percent of total U.S. operator revenues in 2004, compared with 16 percent in Western Europe and 22 percent in Japan. But the telecom consultant firm found that increased text messaging interoperability between carriers and bundled service packages are helping U.S. operators to close the SMS revenue gap on their Western European counterparts.

Wireless messaging revenue increased by 106 percent last year from 2003 and is expected to grow strongly over the next five years, according to the study. By 2008, mobile messaging will generate $16.4 billion for U.S. carriers, the firm predicts.
