Ericsson targets BlackBerry with EMO product

STOCKHOLM, Sweden-L.M. Ericsson announced Jordanian operator MobileCom will use its Ericsson Mobile Organizer to offer push e-mail services. The deal is notable as it puts Ericsson in direct competition with the likes of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. and other wireless e-mail firms like Good Technology Inc., Seven, Visto Corp. and others.

“MobileCom is proud to offer push e-mail to its customers, adding yet another achievement to its distinguished track record,” said Mickael Ghossein, the carrier’s chief executive officer. “With Ericsson’s EMO, the company will provide a fast and timely service, allowing users to gain full control over their office e-mail software by just using their mobile phones.”

Ericsson said its EMO offering links mobile phones and other handheld devices directly with Web-based e-mail applications. Ericsson hosts and manages the services from its operations center in Rome.

Wireless e-mail has blossomed into a hot topic. Although RIM’s BlackBerry is perhaps the most well known offering, other companies looking to play in the space include Microsoft Corp., Nokia Corp. and others.
