Nokia launches open source Internet site

ESPOO, Finland-Nokia Corp. launched an Internet portal designed to allow developers to share information about open-source projects.

The site, OpenSource.nokia.com, includes links that give project descriptions and provides access to any Nokia-developed downloadable code with an open source license. The company hopes to spur innovation by open-source developers working on projects including the new open source browser for Nokia’s Series 60 devices. Introduced earlier this month, the browser is based on the WebCore and JavaScriptCore components of Apple Computer Inc.’s Safari browser.

Other Nokia open source projects include Maemo, URI Query Agent and Python.

The new site is the latest move by the manufacturer to catalyze the open source developer community. In September, the company joined the Eclipse foundation as a strategic developer and board member.

“We believe that open source development contributes to the creation and rapid adaptation of mobile software technologies,” said Lee Epting, Forum Nokia’s vice president. “The new portal demonstrates our commitment to open source activities, and it is a natural extension for our Forum Nokia online developer community.”
