Michigan tests wireless traffic monitoring system

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.-Motorola Inc. and The Michigan Department of Transportation announced plans to establish a roadside network aimed at reducing accidents and congestion by wirelessly connecting vehicles to each other and to roadside transmitters.

The plans center on Motorola’s Motodrive wireless network architecture, which supports the federal government’s Vehicle Infrastructure Integration initiative. The system sends a high volume of wireless data from transmitter devices, which are mounted on light poles, to cars equipped with on-board devices, said Motorola. Cars also are able to send data to the pole-mounted devices.

MDOT is helping to fund the deployment of Motorola’s system in Southfield as part of its ongoing investments in the VII initiative. The agency began evaluating the system last week.
