Enough already with the wires, says Airgo Networks Inc.
Airgo is touting its new third-generation True MIMO chipset, which the company says will revolutionize the way consumers use technology in the home.
Airgo said that in real-world tests, its True MIMO provided TCP/IP throughput of more than 120 megabits per second with uncompressed traffic, which surpasses the performance of wired Ethernet connections and is almost five times faster than conventional wireless networking technologies.
“Airgo was the first mass-market wireless chipmaker to break the Ethernet barrier, and we are now the only silicon provider partnering with OEMs to offer faster-than-wired products to consumers for this holiday season,” said Greg Raleigh, president and chief executive of Airgo. “Now that consumers can get wireless product performance that reaches beyond 100 megabits per second Ethernet speeds, many will stop bothering with the hassle of running wires.”
The company said the new chipset gives consumers wireless access for media-rich content anywhere in the home. The chipset was launched in Netgear Inc.’s wireless product line, called RangeMax 240.
“If there is one truth in consumer technology, it is that speed combined with convenience sells,” said Patrick Lo, chief executive of Netgear. “With 240 megabits per second speed combined with fantastic range, we can now realize the full potential of digitally networked multimedia consumer electronics in the home. It is rare that a company is able to offer its customers a leap-frog technology like our RangeMax 240 based on True MIMO Gen3.”
Airgo points out that products featuring its True MIMO chipset are 802.11a/b/g compatible, so they can be used with any other 802.11 device on a network, a feature that will become more important once digital home convergence is achieved, said Raleigh.
“In the not-too-distant future, our wireless home networks will enable us to enjoy multimedia applications on our phones, computers and TVs,” said Raleigh. “We’ll be able to enjoy video-streaming on our TVs, and watch our favorite shows on our mobile phones.”
